A 200 sq. m building was erected to house the Digital Museum, with 2 floors and a spacious lower level. It was designed in the local architectural style, and was modelled and organised according to a specific museological study.

The Life of G. Jakobides

The personality of the painter is brought to life on the ground floor through the story of his life. Various applications show the myriads of distinctions and awards bestowed upon the artist for his works, and for the medals and coins he designed. Family photographs, his professional accomplishments and social circle are illustrated by means of concise, explanatory texts and references to the key moments in his life. In this way, visitors get to know the man behind the artist.

On the same floor, visitors can better acquaint themselves with a subject they are interested in, by navigating through the Georgios Jakobides cd-rom application. This specially-designed application documents the work and life of the painter. It also features captions for almost all the works on display, as well as a fascinating digital timeline enriched with archive material.

Educational Programmes

On the lower level, in a specially-designed space, a hall has been created where a short video is shown, detailing the artistic path of Jakobides in Athens and Munich. This space can also be used for educational activities that engage both school children and the public at large. A cd-rom entitled “In the atelier of the painter Georgios Jakobides” has been specially designed for students. It features a thematic presentation of his works, explanatory captions for many of these, a plethora of photographs, and educational games.

The Work of G. Jakobides

The first floor is dedicated to Georgios Jakobides’ works: from the first years of his apprenticeship with Nikiforos Lytras, and his works as a student at the Athens School of Fine Arts, to the portraits of his grandchildren which he painted towards the end of his life. Colours, faces, highlights from everyday life are restored through numerous digital applications. Mythological themes, scenes from his childhood and family life, landscapes, human forms in nature, portraits, still lifes and flower still lifes, symbolist works… they all sum up the multifaceted style of Jakobides, which established him as one of the pioneers in Neo-Hellenic Art at the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th.
